6. Angkor Wat entrance esplanade
a) Gives its full support to the goals outlined in the APSARA National Authority project for this to be a pedestrian walking area;
b) Recommends, however, in the overall concept of the corresponding project, an approach not exclusively road-oriented, as the case right now, but one that involve many other disciplines, with due consideration given to aesthetics and land-scape integration;
c) Invites the project owner to extend further west and expand the project footprint so that the esplanade is more directly linked to the future Angkor Wat concourse;
d) In determining the leveling of the esplanade, recommends avoiding a road-type cross-section profile (with sidewalks along the side, concrete edging and a central passageway) and opting for an uninterrupted profile with no footpaths, on the full width of the esplanade, simply working in two side culverts for rainwater collection and drainage;
e) Similarly, in selecting and putting in the ground coverings, recommends that just one kind of cover be used and that a black or grey covering that looks like the usual road pavement be avoid-ed, choosing a more natural cover that makes it possible to see the aggregates of crushed sand-stone or laterite, thus bringing it more in harmony with the general coloring of the temple and its environment;
f) Requests that the project’s green cover and landscaping approach (harmonization) and its relationship on a broader scale to the existing tree cover be spelled out in greater detail;
g) With that in mind, would like to have:
– an amended project addressing more fully those different objectives,
– in situ trials of the different soil coverings in order to come up with the most appropriate final choices.
