5. Bayon Symposium

Based on the 6th Bayon Symposium report, Mr. BESCHAOUCH made the following four recommendations:

  • Continue project implementation in line with the Master Plan’s three objectives, investigation, conservation and maintenance plan, in close collaboration with APSARA Authority;
  • In-depth studies must be conducted on the water flow inside the city of Angkor Thom, with a particular emphasis on the Bayon. EFEO will be in charge of studying the royal terraces, the Baphuon and the hydraulic system of the city of Angkor Thom. Prof. GAUCHER’s tem will collaborate with JSA to study the Bayon and Prasat Suor Prat;
  • Given the relation between the Bayon and Borobudur, Dr. IWASAKI and NOGUCHI are asked to summarize the technical elements that in their opinions would be most beneficial for the Bayon;
  • Regarding the management of the site of Angkor itself, the example of the Nara site should be followed in particular with regards to achieving a balance between cultural property, cultural sites and eco-historic sites.
