16. Parking lot at Phnom Bakheng:
The ad-hoc experts group asked the Secretariat of the ICC-Angkor to reiterate the recommendation 29TS.6, adopted by the ICC-Angkor at the end of the 29th Technical Session of December 13, 2017.
The text of this recommendation which remains current and totally relevant is as follows:
29TS.6. Parking lot at Phnom Bakheng:
Considering that the project to improve the parking lot at the foot of Phnom Bakheng is meeting an obvious need in terms of managing visitor flows.
Drawing attention to the fact as designed, the plan overlaps part of the eastern axis of the temple, the massive stairway of which very likely extended out several hundred meters on a clearly planned causeway and certainly reached well beyond the current road that was put in during the colonial era.
Recommends, prior to undertaking any parking lot improvement work, that an archaeological survey is carried out on that eastern temple axis. That would enable any potential residual structures to be identified. The results could lead to making certain adjustments to the current parking lot layout, while maintaining the capacity.
